TACLOBAN CITY — The construction of the new division office of the Department of Education (DepED)-Division of Tacloban City will soon start, according to top education officials here.
Schools Division Superintendent Ronelo Al Firmo disclosed to Leyte Samar Daily Express that a new division office would soon rise within the vast area of San Fernando Elementary School located along Real St. this city.
During the DepED Day celebration held last Friday at the Tacloban Convention Center, Firmo announced that the construction of this project would already start this coming January 2009.
According to Firmo, there is already a P5 million allotted budget for the phase I construction of this particular project.
“The initial budget to start this project has already been released which was taken from the DepED through the efforts of Leyte’s First District Rep. Martin Romualdez,” Firmo said.
He said they are still expecting additional funding to be released soon so that the project construction would run smoothly and be completed early.
Firmo said this is one of the priority projects that the city division office is undertaking under his leadership as he believes that this would further open new opportunities of improving the quality of education in this city through the establishment of new facilities equipped with the latest educational amenities necessary.
Firmo said that the old city division office presently located across the RTR Plaza will be used as school building for the ESEP class of the Leyte National High School.
ESEP (Engineering and Science Education Program) high schools, otherwise known as S&T Oriented High Schools, are specialized secondary schools in the Philippines heavily focusing a curriculum in Mathematics and Sciences but different from regional science high schools and Philippine science high school system. ESEP high schools are operated and supervised by the Department of Education.
“I believe it is but apt an fitting for us to construct a new division office as Tacloban will no longer remain as is but I am optimistic that the city will already be fully converted into a highly urbanized one as we move towards another calendar year,” Firmo said. (LEMUEL PAGLIAWAN)
