SHC Stallions to represent Eastern Visayas in basketball championshipby JOSE RODRIGUEZ T. SEñASE
TACLOBAN CITY - The Sacred Heart College (SHC) Stallions will represent Eastern Visayas in the upcoming 63rd National Students Basketball Championship (Secondary Level) to be held tentatively on the second week of March in Butuan City.
More than 20 teams from Metro Manila, Cebu and other regions in the country are set to see action in the week-long competitions organized by the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP), headed by Prospero Pichay.
SHC won the berth to represent Region 8 in the High School Division after it bagged the championship crown in Leyte Amateur Athletic Association (LAAA) 4th Season.
Engr. Noli Cabibihan, the SHC head coach and Active Basketball founder, disclosed that the team is extensively preparing for the upcoming tournament.
“I and my assistant coach, Boy Andrade, who is also the Sports Coordinator of Active Basketball, are very busy conducting training drills right now,” Cabibihan revealed.
“Because we are anticipating taller opponents, our focus would be on outside shooting,” he added.
The SHC basketball team was a product of the First Mayor Alfred Romualdez Basketball Clinic and Active Basketball conducted by the Tacloban City Sports Office last 2008.
Bannered by forward Brent Egloso, the LAAA 2009 MVP, the Stallions are having their best season this year. Aside from the LAAA crown, the Stallions also bagged the runner-up honors in the recently-concluded Kasadyaan basketball tournament.
Cabibihan said that he is happy with the support they are receiving from the School administration led by Sister Angelica Shen, Directress of SHC, and Darius Reyes, Supervisor of Student’s Affairs Office ;the Tacloban City Sports Office headed by City Sports Director Joel Bugho; and the LAAA headed by commissioner Paul Advincula.
The National Student Basketball Championship (NBSC) is the biggest and most prestigious collegiate basketball competition in the country.
The tournament, which is spearheaded by the BAP, has three categories- high school boys, senior collegiate men and senior collegiate women.
Last year, the National Basketball Championship, which was eventually won by BIS, was held in Cebu City.
